About:
Okinawa is a group of islands in the southernmost part of Japan, known for its tropical climate, beautiful beaches, and unique culture that blends Japanese and Ryukyuan traditions. It was once and independent kingdom called the Ryukyu Kingdom before becoming part of Japan in the 19th Century.
Okinawa played a major role in World War 2, especially during the Battle of Okinawa in 1945, one of World War 2's bloodest battles. After the war, the islands were under U.S administration until 1972, when they were returned to Japan - though many U.S military bases remain today, the biggest being Kadena Air Force Base which sits in the lower half of the island.
Culturally, Okinawa is known for its distinct language, music (an example would be the Sanshin Instrument), dance, and cuisine - including dishes like Goya Champuru and Okinawa Soba. The islands are also known for the longevity of their people, often linked to their healthy diet and active lifestyle.
